How We Are Shaping Our
Future Today!!!!!!!
St. Croix Estuary Project Inc. (SCEP) is an
independent, community, non-profit
charity that is one of the founding members of Environment Canada's
Atlantic Coastal Action Program (ACAP). Incorporated in 1992, the group
delivers many environmental, educational, and outreach
programs and owns and operates the Quoddy Learning Centre and
Marine Park located on a 350 acre peninsula in the St. Croix Estuary
and Camp Waweig located on 40 acres on the Waweig Estuary.
SCEP is currently seeking
support for two important initiatives that
will have significant positive impacts on the region:
The Quoddy Learning Centre and Marine Park
Located at Todd's Point, the Quoddy Learning Centre
is now the hub of all activities and incorporates our offices, outreach
library and resource centre, a public display and meeting area
and the "Fab Lab”; a place where
“hands-on” teaching, research, and learning activities will take place.
Global warming, alternate energy, sustainable sewage treatment,
fisheries restoration, pollution and health, coastal land development,
developing an eco-economy – all of these issues and more will be topics
for programs and displays, as well as staff and associate initiatives.
This will be the place where people can acquire the information and
learn the practical skills that will be required to face the
challenging future that faces us all.
The Quoddy Learning
Centre and Marine Park has been
designed to attract people to a place that will have an interesting,
practical and applied purpose in a proactive learning environment. SCEP
intends to take the model to other communities with
connections back to the Quoddy Learning Centre. This will
result, we think, in new and unique opportunities that will build on a
targeted market that is identifiable, within reach, and interested.
While SCEP is a non-profit organization, we will be fostering
sustainable
businesses within an “incubator” style structure.
In addition to
environmental and
historical displays, the Quoddy Learning Centre will feature functional
solar, wind, personal
biomass, geothermal power and alternate sewage disposal methods.
Displays and programs will inform visitors about how they can
accomplish shifts in their lifestyle that will benefit the
environment and meet their personal energy and living needs.
Camp Waweig
SCEP was gifted this unique property in 2005. Camp Waweig has served the community for over 80
years. Youth and adult education will continue to be the objective of
this important local asset. As part of the “Fundy Learning Centres”
group, this facility will focus on programs that teach survival and
wilderness skills. Camp Website
